The celebration will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 10am in the students’ union headquarters located in Agouza. Minister of Education Dr Yousry Al Gamal or his deputy will inaugurate the celebration attended by the first deputy minister for Education and counselor of the minister of education Dr. Hassan El-Bilawy, the deputy minister for education and Undersecretary for Basic Education Dr. Amin Abu Bakr, Director General of the NGOs Department in the Ministry of Education Ms. Ibtisam El-Kady, education directorates and administrations in Cairo and Giza governorates, and schools directors and activities’ officers.
Dr. Afaf Marei vice president of EACPE affirmed that this celebration is organized in the framework of promoting the program of Human Rights culture in schools implemented by the Association in collaboration with the Ministry 4 years ago. The program is a successful model of partnership between the government and the civil society in the field of education enhancement.
Excelled schools were honored according to two main criteria. The first criterion is how active and effective are human rights clubs in schools; the second is to which extent human rights values and principles are practically applied in the schools' environment including school administration, teachers and pupils.
Dr. Afaf Marei added that the project is currently implemented in 100 schools on the ARE level, and it aims at educating a new generation on the values of citizenship, participation, freedom of opinion and expression, democracy and human rights; and deepening those values in preparatory and secondary schools' children through a package of activities directed to schools' administrations, teachers, social workers, activities' specialists and students, which deepens and practically applies human rights principles in the framework of the educational system in schools.
One of the program activities is summer camping for girls and boys members of human rights clubs in schools. Camps are organized to raise their awareness of human rights principles, imparting them skills of defending these rights and coupling rights with duties. She mentioned that numerous students have showed a heightened awareness of these rights through the discussion made with the Association coordinators; through articles they wrote; and through researches they conducted on human rights. The Association published these researches in its newsletter "Mosharka" and distributed free copies to schools participating in the project. |
